Electronics Technician - Australia Telescope Compact Array, Narrabri

As an Electronics Technician with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, you will work with a team of experts at the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) in Narrabri (north-western NSW). This unique opportunity to join one of the world’s leading research facilities will present you with a wide range of technical challenges. Working within a small team, you will undertake on-the-job training to gain specific knowledge and experience to carry out technical maintenance, operations support and upgrades on the various systems of the telescope infrastructure.

The Australia Telescope Compact Array is located 25km outside Narrabri at the Paul Wild Observatory.  Administered by the CSIRO, it is one of the largest interferometer radio telescopes in the southern hemisphere with some unique capabilities.  Narrabri rests on the banks of the Namoi River and offers great amenities such as sporting and social clubs, a variety of shops, restaurants and leisure options. Only a two-hour drive to Tamworth (the area’s major regional centre and home to Australia’s largest Country Music Festival), the town is also well connected to Sydney by air and rail and Brisbane by air.

In this role you will:

  • Undertake on-the-job training to gain knowledge and experience specific to the Australia Telescope Compact Array.
  • Maintain the electronics instrumentation of the telescope.
  • Undertake fault diagnosis and routine maintenance.
  • Attend to afterhours breakdowns and work flexible hours as required (including occasional travel to other sites).
  • Coordinate resources for both planned and unplanned maintenance activities.
  • Work to improve or create documentation for processes associated with maintenance activities.

Salary: AU$63k - AU$80k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will hold a relevant Electronics Certificate, Associate Diploma or equivalent (or be working toward either), in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.  You will also have:

  • A current Class ‘C’ Australian driver’s licence (or equivalent)
  • The ability and willingness to work and access heights up to 50m above the ground.
  • commitment to Health, Safety and Environment as a core value.
  • Experience with soldering, rework of PCBs and electronic modules as well as mechanical assembly.
  • Experience in fault finding and diagnostics to solve unique problems for a wide variety of systems.
