The Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group is seeking an outstanding senior executive to fill the Senior Executive Service Band 2 position of First Assistant Secretary Joint Systems.

With a combined Australian Public Service and military workforce of over 5,000 people, Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group manages the delivery of more than 150 complex projects and over 100 sustainment products, with an annual budget in excess of $12 billion.

Within the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group, the Joint Systems Division is responsible for delivering and sustaining a range of complex, sophisticated military systems that underpin defence capability. With a divisional workforce of over 1200 and an annual budget in excess of $2.5 billion, the Division has around 80 major acquisition projects underway, ranging in value from $60 million to over $2 billion, and sustains a wide range of in-service equipment for Defence and other Government agencies. The Defence Integrated Investment Program has over 50 new major acquisition projects that will be managed through the Joint Systems Division.

The head of the Joint Systems Division has a key leadership role in the Defence Department and, more specifically, in the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group. This role is the chief source of advice to the Ministers and the most senior staff in Defence in relation to the areas of acquisition and support of electronic warfare systems, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems, communication systems (from strategic through to tactical), explosive ordnance, deployed information systems and critical battlefield decision support systems.

This position requires significant leadership skills. Deep knowledge and specialist expertise in engineering practice and electronic systems technologies, and extensive experience in the area of business management, including contract management and procurement processes for complex systems, will be required to be competitive.

The remuneration package includes superannuation, an Executive Vehicle allowance and, where applicable, relocation expenses. The salary component for this position may be negotiated with the successful candidate within the Defence Senior Executive Service Band 2 salary range.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing basis or for a specified term. To be eligible for engagement, an applicant must be, or intend to become, a permanent Australian citizen.
