How this position will Make the Difference to City of Melbourne…
The Team Leader City Planning will be responsible for leading and managing the strategic planning and design of future areas of change in the City of Melbourne, adopting a design-led and citizen focused approach in structure planning and masterplanning processes.
Principally focused at the neighbourhood scale, the masterplans and structure plans produced as an outcome of a proactive engagement with communities, will inform future city change, and translate Council endorsed strategies and accepted international best practice into diverse contexts and places across the municipality.
You will lead a team of skilled built environment professionals to enable sustainable development in areas of major change across the municipality and enable a city future which is economically prosperous, socially just and environmentally resilient, aligned with the Council Plan.
As part of the branch leadership team, the Team Leader will contribute to the branch’s effective delivery of Council Initiatives, and play a key role ensuring the work of the branch demonstrates exceptionally collaborative working practice.
You can bring… (Selection criteria)
•A tertiary qualification in planning, architecture, landscape architecture or a relevant profession and either a post graduate qualification in urban design, and/ or extensive professional experience in strategic planning or urban design practice in public or private agency.
•Demonstrated ability to lead, develop and motivate a high performing multidisciplinary team.
•High level interpersonal, presentation, consultation and negotiation skills and the ability to work cooperatively with a wide range of organisations and individuals in government, the private sector and the community.
•Demonstrated experience in working closely with communities in the development of future plans in areas undergoing change (urban renewal or growth).
•Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver high quality, evidence based, and contextually responsive strategic plans, urban design strategies, projects and programs.
Desirable
•Demonstrated ability to be an informed and smart client, managing external consultancy teams to derive high quality outputs and best value.
•Demonstrated personal networks in the Melbourne planning and design community and related public sector agencies, and demonstrated understanding of the development industry in central Melbourne.
•Excellent understanding regarding the theory of cities, including interaction of the natural and built environment, land use, infrastructure and people, and ability to draw on national and international best practice to inform City of Melbourne’s work.
•Excellent analytical, organisational and presentation skills.
•Demonstrated ability to think and plan strategically, manage complex projects and tasks, and to implement projects on time and to budget.
•Excellent oral, written and visual communication skills, and computer literacy in word processing and other standard office software.
•Demonstrated commitment to excellence in customer service.
•Demonstrated understanding of strategies to enable and manage future growth and urban renewal, and of the relationship between transport policy, strategic urban planning, economic development and environmental sustainability.
•Exceptional knowledge of planning practice (strategic and statutory) to ensure translation of design visions into policy or delivery of great outcomes for the City and people.
•Understanding of the drivers of development.
•Understanding of cost benefit analysis and urban economics.
