The Role

As a Mechanical Systems Assurance Lead working in an integrated workforce, you will support the Future Submarine Program by providing independent advice and guidance. Ensuring that the Propulsion and Ship Mechanical systems of the Future Submarine Program (FSP) design are sufficient to establish the Material Seaworthiness Assurance Basis (MSAB) and remain coherent with Navy’s Defence Seaworthiness (DSw) Activity and Condition Based Compliance Obligations (ACCO) compliance strategy. Using yourknowledge and experience of Mechanical Systems, you will assist the Principal Engineer (PE) / Technical Director (TD) in the promulgation of Technical Orders, Instructions and Procedures relevant to the design of Attack Class Submarine (ACSM) and contribute to the Maritime Material Body of Knowledge (MMBoK).

The incumbent will:

  • Be expected to obtain the professional delegation of a Navy Warrant Holder and liaison with Navy submarine capability and technical authorities
  • Assist and advise in the development of Engineering Assurance Plans (EAPs)and formally review for technical completeness.
  • Provide noteworthy technical observations, and observations on the performance of management of risk to Materiel;
  • Review of Detailed Technical Reports or equivalent OQE that are inputs to the Design Assurance Reports;
  • Submit Technical Assurance Surveillance Report (TASR) to Navy (Director General Engineering).
  • Design and maintain standard processes for developing, recording and presenting technical advice and conduct routine review the quality of that advice.
  • Working with the Principal Engineer (PE) of the ACSM Authorised Engineering Organisation (AEO) develop and maintain the Functional, Allocated and physical baselines. For each of the major design reviews (where a baseline design is struck i.e. SFR, PDR, CDR) provide written review of each Attack Class Submarine (ACSM) Propulsion and Ship Mechanical system Design Assurance Report.
  • Assist the PE in the characterisation of risk and monitor FSP technical risk register for quality, consistency and comprehensiveness. Submit draft risk reports as required.
  • Foster knowledge and growth of technical SQEP as Australia sets up sovereign submarine capability.

The right person will demonstrate the agility to actively engage people to respond effectively to the changing context and shifting priorities of the program. The incumbent will possess or have the potential to acquire the acumen to operate effectively with the sphere of Defence Support System operations and design as well as the Defence Capability Lifecycle process.
