Senior Safety Advisor

The Role

The Senior Safety Advisor will be responsible for the efficient delivery of safety strategies and frameworks within a multi-billion-dollar program and will support a range of critical functions for both the Safety and Project teams within Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV). The role is required to develop and lead initiatives, take appropriate action for urgent matters, provide specialist advice on major construction and engineering projects, and influence multiple stakeholders and contractors to achieve a safe working environment, both on and off project sites. In addition to this, the role will develop and implement initiatives to support MRPV's safety culture and the wellbeing of our people.

The role sits within the Safety and Wellbeing team, reporting to the Area Safety Manager however will involve most time spent at project sites and office locations with the MRPV project delivery teams. The organisation operates on a matrix resource structure; therefore, the role will have secondary reporting lines into project delivery team(s).

 Additionally, other accountabilities include

  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining safety management systems, as well as safety strategy and framework documents.
  • Providing expert advice support, and coaching to MRPV employees across all aspects of safety, including on-site and office requirements.
  • Undertake regular safety monitoring and due diligence reviews across multiple MRPV projects.
  • Conducting incident investigations and undertaking trend analysis using the MRPV Incident Management System (IMS).
  • Collaborating with stakeholders and contractors to achieve an optimal safe working environment.
  • Develop organisational capability within various areas of safety and contractor management.

This is a fixed term position for 3 years.

About you

Ideally, you will have:

  • A relevant diploma or degree qualification in safety or a related field, and/or extensive experience is mandatory.
  • Relevant experience in engineering or the construction field and/or road construction environment will be highly regarded.
  • Relevant experience in a senior management safety related role.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and leading teams in the implementation of complex safety strategies and systems. 
  • Sound knowledge of risk management principles and related practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing health and safety management systems and providing advice to managers and staff about best practice HSE matters.
  • Be an excellent communicator and leader, with the ability to engage effectively across a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders.
  • You will be able to influence, build and maintain effective relationships. Additionally, and  a leader and mentor to a team, educating, driving best practice safety outcomes for the wellbeing the team
