Authorities are warning that asbestos has been found in imported gaskets.

In March 2021, the Australian Border Force (ABF) examined two gaskets in a consignment of after-market parts and components imported from China destined for use in construction plants. The two gaskets were compatible with models of Komatsu and Shantui bulldozers.

The gaskets were sampled and tested and found to contain chrysotile asbestos.

A safety alert has been issued by the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency reminding importers of Australia’s zero tolerance for asbestos.

Products with any level of asbestos, regardless of age, are prohibited for import into or use in Australia. It is the responsibility of importers to ensure that imported goods do not contain asbestos.

All employers, self-employed people or hobby mechanics who work on older vehicles, need to take precautions to protect themselves and others from airborne asbestos fibres, the authorities say.
