AEMO says a strong pipeline of energy projects is progressing through the NEM connection process.

However, the authority is still urging new investments amid the anticipated retirement of two-thirds of coal power stations in the next decade.

Key October 2023 insights show 620 MW approved applications, totaling 1,560 MW year-to-date. Notably, 630 MW achieved full operational status.

AEMO’s latest scorecard predicts a major influx, with 90 per cent of new projects in early stages, representing half of NEM's total capacity.

Battery project applications surged year-on-year from 14 projects (1,860 MW) to 22 projects (5,100 MW). Of the 69 pre-registration projects (11,000 MW), 39 (6,830 MW) are set for construction, showcasing accelerated timelines and proactive engagement.

Despite positive trends, developers face challenges like resource shortages and prolonged pre-registration periods for 25 per cent of projects.

AEMO and Clean Energy Council's updated Connections Reform Roadmap aims to streamline and align the connection process with commercial milestones.
