The proposed Olympic Dam expansion project passed another milestone after the Commonwealth announced that BHP Billiton’s Supplementary Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was ready to be assessed by Federal, State and Territory Governments.

The Supplementary EIS is the company’s response to the almost 4200 government and public submissions that were made after the draft EIS was published in May 2009.

The Supplementary EIS provides additional information and answers key questions raised during the consultation process.

The approval of the supplementary EIS enables the South Australian and Commonwealth Governments to enter into the formal development assessment phase for the project.

BHP Billiton will now prepare for the publishing of the document, which will be made publicly available when this is completed in May.

The Government expects to make its development decision before the end of 2011.
