Antenna and Radio Frequency Engineer

CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science (CASS) operates several world-class radio astronomy observatories that are collectively known as the Australia Telescope National Facility or the ATNF. CASS is one of the world’s leading astronomical facilities and Australia’s premier radio astronomy research organisation.  CASS is a key partner in the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project which has the goal of building the world’s most sensitive radio telescope.  CASS is also engaged in the commercialisation of its wide band cryogenic phased array technology.

As an Antenna and RF Engineer with CASS, you will provide antenna array beamforming expertise to industry clients and large in-house projects.  As a pivotal member of a skilled engineering team, you will initially focus on the phased array commercialisation project.  Using models of our phased array design, you will evaluate the capabilities with digital beamforming, including beamformer weights, aperture tapering and G/T with scan angle. Interacting closely with other hardware and software engineers, you will implement and integrate the beamforming algorithms into the array, develop a measurement and test plan for a demonstration array and be involved in the commissioning of the demonstrator on site.  The position has the potential to expand based on expected development of new projects and possible larger programs of work in the next few years.

In this role you will:

  • Together with antenna and signal processing engineers, optimise digital beamforming approaches for our array.
  • Develop predictions of the array performance in various scenarios.
  • Working closely with hardware and software engineers, implement the beamforming algorithms into the array.
  • Develop measurement and test plans for evaluating array performance in our anechoic chamber.
  • Conduct on-site commissioning measurement / verification of beamforming performance.
  • Undertake element and array optimisation for future radio astronomy and commercial applications.
  • Carry out antenna and feed system design and analysis for future radio astronomy receivers.
  • Provide technical leadership within and outside the team and collaborate with other teams to meet objectives as required.
  • Participate in project scoping and planning, contribute to the technological direction, engage in project timelines, self-manage progress and respond to deadlines.

Salary: AU$98k - AU$106k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an area relevant to this position. 

You will also have:

  • Experience in complex antenna array analysis, such as antenna array modelling from either the antenna or signal processing fields, antenna array design, electromagnetic modelling and/or measurement.
  • Experience with electromagnetic analysis software, such as HFSS or CST Studio.
  • Experience and proficiency in programming, data manipulation, and data visualization using languages such as Python or MATLAB.
  • Sound judgement in selecting appropriate approaches to solving complex technical problems.
  • Excellent communication skills with a strong client focus, and a history of successful relations across a range of stakeholder groups.
  • The ability to work effectively both individually and as a member of a high-functioning technical team.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours (as required), and from time-to-time spend periods of up to two weeks working at locations away from Sydney.
